Puma Aquatics went head-to-head with the Bakersfield Aquatic Club on September 24, the first dual meet Puma has hosted in its 15-year history.
The meet took place at Arroyo Grande High School. There was an 8 and Under division, 12 and Under division, and an Open division (13 and up).
In the Boys Open division, Alan Peterson, 18 and Zachary Stevens, 15, stole the show. Peterson won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 47.10 seconds. He was also the victor in the 100 backstroke (57.17), and was runner-up in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Stevens won the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley, posting times of 59.46 and 2:04.10, respectively. He also came in second in the 100 backstroke.
Gaby Penvenne, 14, was consistently a top-three finisher in the Girls Open division. She finished second in the 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, and 100 butterfly. She also came in third in the 50 freestyle and 200 individual medley.
Corryn Haynes, 15, and Claren Ruth, 17, were also dominant in the age group. Haynes won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:19.10, and finished second in the 100 breaststroke. Ruth finished in the top-five in four of her six events.
Emily Burchfield, 10, was a force in the Girls 12 and under division. Burchfield won the 50 breaststroke, posting a time of 37.35. She also placed second in the 100 individual medley, and third in the 50 freestyle.
For the Boys 12 and Under division, Kevin Virnig was dominant. The 10-year-old finished in the top three in all but one of his seven events. Virnig won the 50 backstroke and 50 butterfly with times of 38.70 and 39.83, respectively. He was runner-up in the 100 freestyle, 50 breaststroke, and 100 individual medley. He also got third in the 50 freestyle.
8-year-olds Christie Osborne and Carson Spoo both had excellent performances in the Girls 8 and Under events. Osborne won the 25 freestyle (23.23) and 25 backstroke (27.82). Spoo took first in the 50 freestyle (50.47).
There were also two relay events: a 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay. Both relays were mixed age and gender, so there are no results, but Puma won both relays.
The meet was not sanctioned.
