A group of Puma swimmers traveled to Long Beach this past weekend to compete in the 2011 Winter Age Group Championships (WAGS), hosted by the Santa Barbara Swim Club.
The first two days of the meet were held at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool, but Sunday's sessions were held at the Golden West Aquatic Center due to problems with the pumps at Belmont.
Despite the change in facility, Puma placed 22nd in combined team scoring with 159 points. There were 45 swim clubs competing in the meet (the Aquazot Swim Club won with 4,334.5 points).
One of the top scorers for Puma was Gaby Penvenne, 14. Penvenne scored in all of her six events. She won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 53.45 seconds. She also placed third in the 50 freestyle (24.99) and and two fifth place finishes, one in the 200 freestyle (2:01.48) and the other in 200 butterfly (2:18.77).
Also swimming in the Girls 13-14 age division was Julia Donath. Donath placed eighth in the 1650 freestyle with a best-time of 19:00.82. In the 1000 freestyle, she placed tenth with an 11:30.00.
Representing the Girls 11-14 division was Elektra Mock, 12. Mock placed in the top 16 in all but one of her six events. The 12-year-olds highest finish was in the 100 freestyle, in which she was 12th with a 58.38. Also swimming in the Girls 11-14 division was Paige Leonard, who competed in seven total events including the 400, 200 and 100 individual medleys.
The high scoring male swimmer for Puma was 10-year-old Kevin Virnig. Virnig swam the 50 and 100 freestyles, 50 and 100 backstrokes, 50 breaststroke, and 100 individual medley in the Boys 9-10 division. He both scored points and dropped time in all six competitions.
